Benefits of Volumetric Fat Grafting

Benefits of Volumetric Fat Grafting

You may have heard about injectable dermal fillers, the incredibly popular treatment for static facial wrinkles, sunken contours, and crepey skin, but you may be less familiar with volumetric fat grafting, injectable fillers’ all-natural counterpart.

Dr. Kiran Polavarapu, at Polavarapu Plastic Surgery in Fort Worth, Texas, offers both treatments and helps you understand the benefits of each so you can make the best decision for your face and your personal aesthetic goals.

As a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon, she is highly trained in the art and skill of transforming your facial features so you walk away with beautiful contours, lovely skin, and a refreshed look that looks and feels natural.

Here, Dr. Polavarapu takes a closer look at volumetric fat grafting and its many benefits.

The volumetric fat grafting concept

The idea behind volumetric fat grafting is simple: we remove fat from one area of your body and inject it into your face. This treatment is also known by several other names, including:

Whichever name you use, the idea behind it is the same. Anywhere your face has lost volume and started to shrivel because the underlying fat has lessened over the years, we can restore to its original volume and soft contours simply by injecting a little of your own fat into the low areas. Here’s what volumetric fat grafting can do for you.

1. Gets rid of unwanted fat in other areas

The first step in your volumetric fat grafting procedure is the harvesting of fat from somewhere else on your body. So, where would you like to lose some fat? Your hips? Your tummy? Your thighs or bottom?

Dr. Polavarapu removes the fat from your donor site of choice using liposuction. Then she processes the fat and injects it into the areas of your face that can benefit from a little extra plumpness.

2. Erases wrinkles

Some wrinkles are caused by years of creating facial expressions. We call these dynamic wrinkles, and the best way to treat them is with a neurotoxin, such as Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®, that relaxes your facial muscles and, therefore, the creases.

But other wrinkles are the result of lost volume under the skin. As you age, you lose fat and your skin thins, leaving behind crepey, shrively skin. Replacing the volume restores the texture of your skin much like a deflated balloon becomes smooth again when you blow it up.

3. Improves definition

In addition to smoothing out wrinkles, volumetric fat grafting can augment the look of some of your facial features. For instance, if you’ve always longed for higher, fuller cheekbones or a stronger chin, volumetric fat grafting can sculpt these features for a more defined look.

4. 2-for-1 treatment

When you come in for a volumetric fat grafting procedure, you really get two treatments in one: fat removed from another area on your body and a smoother, recontoured face.

5. No risk of an allergic reaction

Because Dr. Polavarapu harvests the fat from your own body, there’s no chance you’ll have an adverse reaction to it, which is always a possibility when you inject foreign substances.

Longevity of volumetric fat grafting

While some folks report that the results of their volumetric fat grafting treatment last a year or more, you may notice that some — up to 50% in some cases — of the fat gets absorbed by your body about 3-6 months after your treatment.

But studies show a strange phenomenon may take place when you get a volumetric fat grafting treatment. After the initial decline in the fat volume, there’s an uptick between months 12 and 16, with a notable increase in volume, about 96% of the original fat injection. Researchers believe this may be due to the increase in adipose-derived stem cells in the area after the initial decline.

Eventually, though, your body will absorb the injected fat, at which point, you simply come back and repeat the process.
