Troublesome Skin Problems That Chemical Peels Resolve

May 18, 2021

Scroll through social media or flip through a magazine, and you’ll notice that most cosmetic companies are selling one thing: flawless skin. You might think that modelesque skin is the stuff of dreams, but it might be closer than you think.

It doesn’t come in something you can find in the grocery store or order online — it comes from the power of chemicals you can only find in our office.

Dr. Kiran Polavarapu specializes in addressing your most troublesome skin issues with chemical peels. We’re walking through the flaws that chemical peels fix best, so you can decide if they’re right for you.

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that use chemical solutions to improve the appearance of your skin. The medical-grade chemicals cause the outer layers of your skin to blister and eventually peel off, which reveals the smooth, flawless skin below.

They’re noninvasive procedures that typically only result in mild side effects like flaking, scaling, redness, and dryness. Once these symptoms clear 7-10 days following your treatment, you’re left with brighter, healthier-looking skin.

It’s important to note that deep chemical peels cause a stronger reaction than light or medium peels and may require up to two weeks of down time.

It might sound like a miracle treatment, and in a lot of ways, it is. Chemical peels are versatile and can address a wide variety of skin issues, regardless of your skin type or shade. Here’s a closer look at a few of the most common reasons our patients ask for chemical peels.

Acne

Whether you’re a teen or an adult, acne can wreck your self-confidence. If you’re sick of struggling with blemishes, chemical peels might be right for you. The chemicals slough off the outer layers of dead skin and excess oil and keep your pores and hair follicles from clogging and causing pimples.

Pore problems

With your skin free from clog-forming substances, your pores shrink and become less noticeable, giving you a fresher, cleaner look.

Sun damage

The sun can be your skin’s worst enemy. The harmful UV rays leave you with dry, rough skin instead of a sun-kissed glow. Chemical peels effectively remove those damaged outer layers and reveal skin that hasn’t been damaged by the sun yet.

Wrinkles

We know how frustrating those pesky fine lines and wrinkles that crisscross your face can be. That’s why we recommend chemical peels as a part of your anti-wrinkle treatment plan. The process of chemical peels creates what’s known as a controlled wound. This minor “injury” to your skin kicks your body into healing mode and triggers new collagen production. The collagen rebuilds your skin from within and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Scarring

The same controlled wound that helps your body build structural proteins and fight against wrinkles can also reduce the appearance of scars. As the chemicals strip old layers of skin away, underneath, your body regenerates new collagen to smooth out your scars and reveal new skin.

Pigmentation issues

Melanin is the pigment that produces your skin’s unique shade and tone. When your body starts to produce too much melanin (also known as hyperpigmentation) as the result of sun damage, age, acne, pregnancy, or even certain birth control pills, you can wind up with dark spots or blotches on your skin.

Chemical peels effectively remove the layers of your skin that have been affected by hyperpigmentation, leaving you with a more even skin tone.
