Fat Transfer to the Breast - Dr. Kiran Polavarapu

Home BREAST Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer

If you’ve been considering enhancing your curves and naturally getting fuller breasts, you’re in the right place. Silicone breast implants come to mind when most people think about breast augmentation. However, breast enlargement using fat transfer is an alternative and perfect solution if you want to use your own tissues to modestly enhance the size of your breasts. Many women find fat transfer to the breast appealing because of its many benefits.

If you are considering fat transfer breast enlargement, your female Fort Worth plastic surgeon, Dr. Kiran Polavarapu, is one of the best in breast augmentation. She expertly applies fat transfers to help women get their desired breast size, shape, and proportion and feel more confident about their bodies.

Fat transfer to the breast, also called autologous fat grafting, is a surgery to boost breast size and shape using your own fat cells.

It’s a two-step process: first, the surgeon takes fat from donor areas like your belly, thighs or buttocks through liposuction. Then, the fat is purified and injected into your breasts to get the size and shape you want. Although the procedure is minimally invasive, it is usually carried out under general anesthesia.

The injected fat grows new blood arteries, settles in your breasts and becomes a part of the tissue there. This happens because fat cells are living cells with the ability to regenerate new tissues. However, despite fat’s ability to regenerate, some of the injected cells will die. Taking that into account, we first inject a little bit more fat cells to ensure the outcome is up to your expectations. About six months following the fat transfer operation, you may anticipate seeing the full effect.

Additionally, if you would like to enhance your breast profile while increasing the size of your breasts, we can combine a breast lift with your fat transfer.

Am I A Good Candidate?

Although fat transfer can give the breasts a very natural augmentation, it isn’t appropriate for every woman. During your consultation, Dr Polavarapu will examine your skin, breasts and surrounding tissues to know if a fat transfer breast augmentation is the best option for you.

You are a good candidate for fat transfer breast enlargement if you meet the following criteria:

  • You want to increase your breast size by one cup. If you want two to three sizes of breast enlargement, you might have to get an artificial implant.
  • You have sufficient body fat for harvesting through liposuction.
  • Hormonal changes can affect the outcome of fat transfer breast augmentation so, you shouldn’t be pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You prefer a natural enhancement using your body’s own tissue.
  • You are in good health and not receiving breast cancer treatment.
  • You have realistic expectations about the procedure. You should know whether a fat transfer can give you the desired results in your breasts before you decide to have the operation.
  • You have experienced complications with artificial breast implants.
  • You don’t smoke or plan to quit weeks before the procedure.

Benefits of Fat Transfer to the Breasts

The following are some of the advantages of breast enlargement using fat transfer :

  • Breasts augmented with fat transfer look and feel like natural breast tissue. The procedure is the most natural way to get fuller and more shapely breasts without silicone or saline implants.
  • Since the transplanted fat is made of your own tissue, your body cannot reject it.
  • Recovery after a fat transfer breast enhancement is generally fast and straightforward.
  • Breast enhancement fat transfer gives permanent results, unlike breast implants which usually require replacement after a few years.
  • Breast augmentation with fat transfer gives the benefit of two procedures in one session - breast enhancement and body contouring at donor areas.

Disadvantages of Fat Transfer to the Breast

Some of the risks associated with fat transfer breast enlargement include:

  • As with any surgery, there is a chance of infection and bleeding.
  • Some of the injected fat tissue may break down or the cells may die (fat necrosis) and turn to scar tissue.
  • Sometimes a fat transfer won’t provide you the desired cup size increase in your breasts.
  • You may require several fat grafting procedures over a few months, usually under general anesthesia.

What to Expect

During your consultation, Dr. Polavarapu will meet with you to discuss and understand your concerns, aesthetic goals and desires. She will thoroughly examine your breasts, and ask about your medical history to determine if fat transfer to the breast surgery is the best option for you.  You will also have sufficient time to ask her any questions.

Fat transfer to the breasts is not a painful surgery. It is performed under general anesthesia. This means you will sleep and not feel anything during the procedure. The fat transfer procedure involves liposuction, removing fat from where you have excess, then separating the fat from other liquids using a special machine. After that, the surgeon will inject the fat into your breasts using tiny needles. You should budget four to five hours for the complete treatment.

After the fat breast transfer, you may have some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in your breast and liposuction areas for up to two weeks but your surgeon will help you manage pain and promote healing. The complete effects of the fat transfer and the final contour of the breasts may take up to six months.

You should follow your surgeon’s instructions closely and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth recovery and beautiful, long-lasting results. Whatever questions you may have as you go through your healing process, Dr. Polavarapu is always more than happy to help.

One of the most common reasons for breast augmentation is a woman’s desire to enlarge the size of her breasts because she feels they’re too small. An implant can increase the size of your breasts by one or more cup sizes.

Other reasons for breast augmentation include:

  • To replace lost breast volume following weight loss or pregnancy
  • To correct asymmetry in size or shape between the two breasts
  • To restore contour after breast cancer surgery
  • To correct a hereditary condition that causes disfigurement of your breasts

Breast augmentation might also be included along with a breast lift to improve the shape when breasts sag or have lost their firmness.

Implants consist of a silicone shell filled with either saline solution or a silicone gel, and both types are approved by the FDA. Dr. Polavarapu can help you decide the best type of implant for you based on your body type, augmentation goals, and breast anatomy. She offers her educated recommendation based on expected surgical outcomes as well as your lifestyle and personal preferences. Implants can vary in texture, shape, diameter, and projection.

You’re administered general anesthesia for a breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Polavarapu considers your anatomy when determining how to place the incisions and makes every attempt to minimize the resulting scars. Incisions may be in the crease underneath your breast, around the areola, or in your armpit.

Dr. Polavarapu works through the incision to lift your existing breast tissue and create space behind it to place the implant. Alternatively, she may decide that placement behind the pectoral muscle is preferable. Once the implant is positioned, she closes the incisions and bandages your chest to promote healing. The entire procedure takes 1-2 hours.

For the first few days following augmentation surgery, you’ll feel sore and your breasts will be bandaged. In 10 days, Dr. Polavarapu removes the stitches, but some swelling will persist for 3-5 weeks.

If you have a relatively sedentary job, you can return to work after just a few days. Dr. Polavarapu provides detailed instructions about when you can resume exercising and other normal activities. Expect to have some soreness in your breasts for 2-3 weeks.
